Drop-In Centre

Drop-In Centre: A Lifeline on the Streets of Parow

The El Theos Drop-In Centre serves as a critical frontline sanctuary for children and youth who have been displaced by poverty, abuse, or neglect. While our ECD program focuses on prevention, our Drop-In Centre is where we provide immediate, life-saving intervention for those currently living on or off the streets. We offer more than just a meal; we provide the dignity, safety, and professional support needed to begin the journey home.

Immediate Relief: Meeting Basic Needs

For a child surviving on the streets, every day is a struggle for survival. We provide a consistent, safe space where their most basic needs are met with compassion and excellence:

  • Nutritional Support: We serve an average of 80 to 140 nutritious meals daily. In July 2024 alone, we provided over 4,200 meals to children and vulnerable community members.

  • Hygiene & Clothing: We provide hot showers and clean clothes. During the harsh winter months, we distribute essential items like raincoats and handmade blankets to protect our youth from the elements.

  • A Safe Haven: Our center is a “Home for Everyone,” offering a stable alternative to the dangerous influences of the street during the day.

Restoration: Social Work & Crisis Intervention

True change happens when we address the trauma behind the displacement. Our professional social work team provides:

  • Crisis Counseling: Helping children navigate the complex emotional landscapes of neglect and abuse.

  • Case Management: Every child who visits our centre is entered into our system, allowing us to track their progress and create a customized path toward reintegration.

  • Rehabilitation Placements: For children facing severe challenges or substance dependency, we facilitate placement into specialized, long-term rehabilitation programs. We recently successfully placed a youth into a comprehensive one-year recovery program, a life-changing investment in their future.

Empowerment: Skills and Life Readiness

We believe in “Changing Communities Through Renewed Thinking.” Our Drop-In Centre utilizes our newly expanded facility to offer:

  • Vocational Training: In our multifunctional workshops, older youth learn practical trades like carpentry and sewing, giving them the tools to build a self-sufficient future.

  • Life Skills Coaching: We focus on building Self-Confidence and Self-Respect—essential qualities that help youth resist the pull of street life and envision a career.

  • Literacy & Tutoring: We bridge the educational gap for youth who have been out of school, preparing them for formal re-enrollment.

Success in Action: From the Street to the Classroom

Our intervention model works. In August 2024, we celebrated the successful school re-enrollment of four children who were previously street-involved. By providing them with full uniforms, stationery, and ongoing social work support, we ensured they didn’t just return to school—they returned with the confidence to stay there.

Our Commitment to Standards

To provide the best possible care, we maintain the highest operational standards. Our Drop-In Centre is fully compliant with:

  • Fire & Safety Clearances

  • Certificates of Acceptability for Food Premises

  • Environmental Health Standards

We are proud members of the Western Cape Street Children’s Forum (WCSCF), ensuring our interventions are ethical, legal, and effective.

Support the Intervention

The Drop-In Centre is funded entirely through the generosity of partners and donors. Your support directly funds:

  • R2,500/month for a child’s specialized rehabilitation.

  • Daily Meals for over 80 children.

  • Vocational Materials for our carpentry and sewing workshops.
